Field Comm
Near field communication enables smartphones to communicate by touching together or in near proximity of typically 10 cm, roughly four inches, or less. Communication is made by electromagnetic induction, with a carrier frequency of 13.56 megahertz and between approximately one hundred to four hundred kilobits per second data rate. This is an unlicensed ISM radio band, available worldwide. The technology was initiated by the NFC Forum, which was founded in 2004 by Nokia, Philips Semiconductors (which became NXP in 2006) and Sony. NFC is not the same as QR Codes, which only allow reading using a smartphone, while NFC allows two-way secure transactions.
