Common Design Challenges
As USBs are increasingly being used in industrial applications, port protection is needed more than ever due to the harsh environment as well as the higher voltages used. This creates some challenges, such as being able to withstand up to 40 VDC. Technicians may accidently wire the power supplies incorrectly and USB circuitry may not be able to withstand these errors and voltages. USB ports are not only connected to power supplies, but also carry signals over these pins. These signals must also be protected, but to be compliant with USB 2.0, USB protection devices must support data rates up to 480 megabits per second (Mbps). Today, most solutions do not adhere to these standards.
