A traditional transformer design for a high voltage and high performance gate drive application was a toroid wound with triple insulated wire. The Vishay GDT series is an example of this type of design. It was extremely difficult to reduce the size of this type of design until the release of the MGDT series. A benchmark comparison between the GDT series and the MGDT series show that parasitic losses such as leakage inductance and interwinding capacitance were not compromised by size reduction. The height of the transformer was reduced from 30.5 mm to 11.4 mm in the thru-hole package with the volume reduced by almost 4 times.
